I am not a gardener.
I had never honestly cared much about my yard, let alone any yard, or the idea of having a garden. I know, I know, your mouth is probably hanging open right now. (Remember that I do live in Phoenix, and it gets hot here. Like “why would you step outside” hot, for approximately 6 months a year.)
But Covid…for all the reasons I hate it (I tell my kids not to use this word, but feel it truly applies here), there have been some blessings.
We were forced to slow down. And while I took a chunk of this time to recover from cancer surgery, I did so fairly quickly and then was able to find some positive things to focus on; like bike rides, puzzles, craft projects, and yes, starting a garden.
I wasn’t trying to join a bandwagon or the latest trend, yet I suddenly had an urge to do it. For my kids and I to have this together.
Talk about being “green” (pun intended); I was, and still am, the ultimate garden novice. But green means go; so I did. And huge kudos to my hubs who worked very hard to create our above ground bed and irrigation system!!
So in April, we planted our first round. And I learned some very important things as I went along. And a few things died. But, I did not give up and kept tending my little plants.
I cannot tell you how I love going out each morning and taking care of our little garden. Probably makes me sound old. I don’t care.
I’m glad to have discovered this about myself during this time.
And one June day, I discovered 3 (big) cucumbers! Hot dog- this wasn’t all for nothin’!! (And apparently I have a knack for cucumbers as that’s pretty much all the fruit that grew this go around. Yet I hear season 2 for some plants are better than 1.)
Garden bed 2 (and final) will be making an appearance this fall. I’ve even ordered my seeds and am making my design. Maybe I’m turning into a gardener after all.
