One year ago…and so thankful.
It was one year ago that Asher had surgery at age 6 to remove his tonsils and adenoids. And man, we are so proud of our tough guy, as surgery is not easy; and it was also quite a road to get there.
For about 2 years Asher struggled with snoring, waking up exhausted, and frequent meltdowns. The pediatrician told us it was allergies; just give him medicine.
My gut told me otherwise.
We even went to an ENT, who said there was nothing out of the ordinary and probably allergies. Yet, the allergist found he wasn’t allergic to anything. But he mentioned I should look into getting a sleep study done.
At this point I was either crazy to keep pursuing a “non-issue”; or my mom gut was right.
And it was.
We did a sleep study and found out Ash had sleep apnea. He actually stopped breathing multiple times during the study!!
This diagnosis warranted surgery. The poor kid also had chronic tonsillitis- masking as allergies- and when his tonsils came out, the second (and wonderful) ENT told us they were 4 times the size of what they should be!
Allergy meds would never have fixed that.
He’s doing great! Eating and growing more (had no idea enlarged tonsils affected this), as well as breathing and sleeping better!
Mamas/parents- trust your gut! It’s ok to question a doctor or seek another opinion. Advocate for your kiddos! You’ll never regret it, and you’ll be forever thankful.
